Hampshire Open Studios

A weekend visiting some of the many Hampshire Open Studios

This weekend has been a weekend of meeting with Artists, Photographers and Crafters taking part in the Hampshire Open Studios 2014.  We have been spreading the word about the Titchfield Art & Craft Show and will hopefully have a few more new faces joining us for the 2015 show.  We decided to explore some of the Open Studios from Warsash through to Winchester and Chandlers Ford this weekend.

This is how our weekend panned out, and the places we visited;

Warsash Studios

The weekend started off with a visit to Warsash Studios, a great new studio just opened in Warsash.  It has a nautical themed shop and the Garden Studio at the rear of the shop.  The gallery is currently hosting a collection of work from local Artists, Photographers and Crafters for Hampshire Open Studios, but will be used to run courses on various different crafts for the future, you can find a list of day courses on their website in the Events section.

Warsash Art Group

Our next stop, as it is just down the road from Warsash Studios, was the Warsash Art Group Annual Exhibition. Although this is not part of the Hampshire Open Studios it was an exhibition not to be missed.  The Warsash Art Group always have a wonderful exhibition of work on display. Unfortunately if you missed it this weekend it has already finished as it only runs for one weekend, but it is definitely an exhibition worth keeping an eye out for next year.

Stuart Tocher & Mark Chamberlain

Stuart & Mark are first time exhibitors in Hampshire Open Studios.  Stuarts work is generally Oil, and he paints seascapes.  He is a really nice guy to talk to and is more than happy to share his knowledge and experiences in painting with visitors to his home studio.  His fine art prints can be found at The Art Barn.
Mark is a photographer and specializes in long exposure seascapes.  The pictures he has on display are amazing.  If you are looking for some high quality Monotone images printed on Aluminium then he is the man to talk to.  He also has colour images printed on Aluminium.  If you have not seen this medium used for printing it is worth a look, as it gives the images a wonderful look and feel to them.  Marks website is

Fair Oak Art and Craft Society

The Fair Oak Art and Craft Society have been meeting for 35 years at the Village Hall in Fair Oak. They put on a fantastic 35th anniversary exhibition of work by their members, from art to craft, there was a bit of something for all tastes. One thing that we enjoyed the most was being able to look through members sketch books and see how their work has changed over the years. Unfortunately this is also a show that was only run for the one weekend. However they will be holding their Annual Exhibition in November during the weekend of the 8th/9th.

Hilary A Archer

As we were planning on venturing into Winchester we stopped off at Hilarys house on the way past, and we were glad that we did. Hillary is such an enthusiastic artists, she has her artwork all over her house. The only room that there isn’t a picture or sculpture or carving in is the bathroom. She was a wonderful collection of her work on display, and some that is not on display, but she pulled out from cupboards to show us. Her carvings are wonderful, and she uses a variety of different materials, she had some stone that came from Salisbury Cathedral and some wood work as well. Hilary has a website where you can see some of her work and find her contact details :

Dallas Maughan, Brynja Maughan, Marion Browning, Joan Sortwell

As we drove through Badger Farm on the way to Winchester we noticed the familiar Open Studio signs directing us down towards Olivers Battery, so decided to follow them to see what was on display. We were well rewarded on finding this little treasure trove of Art including Photography by Brynja, Paper collage work by Dallas, Intricately stitched cards and felt work were all on display here.

2D3D South Contemporary Art

A very well organised Exhibition of work by the members of this group held in a great light airy space at The West Downs Centre. The exhibition is over 2 floors and contained a good variety of work. The availability of a glass of wine was very much appreciated, as was the interaction with the artists, as most of the exhibitors were there to talk to about their art work and their journey in the world of art.

Louise & Gordon Brown With Friends

We were on our way to Romsey for our final visit when I saw that there was a Photographer in Chandlers Ford who sounded interesting, so we detoured to visit Louise & Gordon Brown at their home. There was an extensive collection of photographs displayed in their Garden Studio. Gordon is the photographer, and it was great to chat about photography with him and discuss some of the decisions around editing and framing certain images. Louise is a framer, amongst many other talents, and also had some basket weaving work on display which was interesting. As the day was getting on the home cafe with seating in the beautiful garden was welcomed and a cup of tea and slice of home made cake went down very well.

Purbeck Cottage Studios

After discussing Photography with Gordon he recommended that we visited Purbeck Cottage Studios where several of his fellow Winchester Photographic Society members where holding their own Open Studio so we decided that as it was on the way back home we would go their instead of going into Romsey. This was another amazing find on our trail for the day. The amount and quality of Photography, Linocut prints, crafts and Jewellery on display was fantastic and it was displayed in the great setting of a barn which was converted into a gallery for the purpose of the Open Studios. There were also refreshments available, as well as most of the exhibitors to talk to.

And so we reached the end of a day and a half visiting Hampshire Open Studios 2014, and came away very satisfied to have met lots of wonderful Artists/Photographers/Crafters on our journeys. We are hoping that we will be able to get to as many more of the Open Studios venues as we can over the course of the next week, so if you are reading this, and have an Open Studio, please don’t feel put out that we haven’t mentioned you this weekend, we are quite probably on our way to see you…
